Tell us a little about yourself? (name, age, location, profession…)
My name is Will Smith, 30 years old and I currently live in sunny San Diego. By day I work for a rental company renting heavy equipment, forklifts and aerial lifts to construction companies and smaller equipment to do-it-your-selfers and weekend warriors. Bartender by night. I have been bartending for years and probably always will. When I hear the saying "If you have fun at work, you'll never work a day in your life," bartending is the first thing that comes to mind. It truly never feels like work.
How long have you been growing your beard?
A razor hasn't traveled my entire face since before I was 18. Since then I have had hair on my face in one shape or another, but kept a shorter beard for at least the last 7 or 8 years. It wasn't until recently I decided to let it grow. As of the end of June, I have been growing my beard out for 1 year and 10 months.
What have been some of the struggles you have encountered (if any) in growing your face art?
My beard actually has never been too much of a struggle to grow and maintain. Maybe having facial hair for so long helped out. Like a training beard, before the real thing. The one thing that most men will say when growing is the itch. It only itches when its short and the hair curls back on the skin. Get over it and let it grow, it will pass. Good oils and balms help. Once my beard started getting longer I was first introduced to the first step in beard care in the form of straight coconut oil. My girlfriend told me that I needed to care for and feed my beard to keep it growing and looking good. Since then, oils, balms and beard shampoos are a must.
What is the dumbest thing you have heard from someone else commenting on your beard?
Dumbest comments are usually about hipsters or how we are all following a trend, or did I forget to stop growing after November.
Does your spouse (or random lovers) appreciate the beard?
My girlfriend and I have been together for about 5 1/2 years now and have known each other for almost 7. She has never seen my face clean shaven and doesn't care to. She is pro beard and loves it longer. Both of my jobs don't mind it either. If they did, I wouldn't be working for them. THE BEARD STAYS!
Share something interesting you would like people to know about you. (this can be anything from “I like kittens” to “I’ve traveled the world and have found a passion for helping mountain goats find their true calling…growing out their sick beards”
I am asked all the time where I go or who trims my beard. Truth is I've never had a barber, or anyone for that matter, trim my beard. Aside from the occasional strays, I trim my own about every 3 or 4 months. Not really sure how I learned. Maybe trial and error when my beard was less mature. Just keep in mind when trimming, less is DEFINITELY more and a hand held mirror to see the profile is key.
I am currently a prospect for @Beardedvillains / @Beardedvillainssocal bearded brotherhood. My beard is a part of my life and always will be. The bearded community is an amazing one to be a part of. It would be an awesome opportunity to be sponsored by White Spade ♠.
